LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) — The rescue team searching a Douglas Co. lake for a missing 17-year-old have found a small boat, which they believe may be the one that capsized Saturday, throwing him and another teen into the water.
The Douglas Co. Sheriff’s Office says the boat was found around 2:00 p.m. and they are currently trying to determine if it is the same boat.
Searchers have not found the missing teen, who has not been identified, and have said their efforts have moved from rescue to recovery.
Authorities say the teens were in a small boat Saturday night around 10:00 p.m. when it capsized and they were sent into the lake. They have not determined what the boys were doing or why the boat capsized.
One of the 17-year-olds immediately resurfaced and was able to make it out of the water. His name has not been released either at this time.
The Douglas Co. Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks, as well as other first responder agencies, began searching the lake that night and all day Sunday. The search Sunday night was called off because of darkness.
The Sheriff’s Office and the KDWP resumed their search again early Monday morning.
