Cole: Hunter safety class coming up next month – The Tennessean

Top of the morning to all you fine and wonderful folks. I do hope you are each doing fantastic. Got a great article for you this week.

My email, Facebook messenger and my phone has been going crazy with folks wanting to know when the next Hunter Safety class will be. Well, here it is.

The Dickson Police Department will be hosting a Hunter Education Safety Class during the week of Monday, March 13, 2017 through Friday, March 17, 2017.

Here is the link to sign up:

https://twra.state.tn.us/HunterEdEventRegistration/EventDetails.aspx?eventid=2117 .

I am truly hoping that the link works correctly but you guys know how sometimes technology just does not work right. It was very difficult finding a location to host the class at this time around. Fortunately, Restoration Church on Henslee Drive in front of the Dickson High School stepped up to the plate and offered their assistance. We thank them immensely for this.

The class will be held each night starting promptly at 6 pm and ending no later than 9 pm. There will be NO class on Wednesday night.

There is a safety shoot that will be talked about during class time that each student must complete on Friday. Know that there is a 100 question test. As long as you pay attention, take notes and review the chapters in the book, you will be fine. If your child needs the test read to them, that is fine. We will have someone to do that but the parents can’t be the one reading to the children.

Alright; please do not bring any guns or ammo to the class. Those will be provided by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Each student is required to attend each night of class. If you can’t commit to each night, you need to find another class at another date. No sport training, cheerleading, banquet or any other reason will be excused. If you miss a night of class, we can’t allow you to graduate. A lot of parents tell me that sports is very important to their children. That is all well and good but your child’s safety is very important to us.

Parents are welcome to drop their children off with us as long as you are back by 8:45 pm to pick them up. We may not let out till 9:00 pm but at least your child is not out waiting at that point just in case. You know your children much better than we do. If you know your child needs your attention so they do not misbehave, you are welcome to sit through class with them. If a child misbehaves, we will correct that the first time. The second time a parent will be called to pick them up.

Please bring a pencil or a pen to take notes. We will provide you a Hunter Safety book and you are free to make notes in them. We will also provide other brochures/handouts during the week as well. Students are welcome to bring snacks/drinks with them to class. Make sure that you take your trash to the trash bin after you are done with them. The next Hunter Ed class that we will host will be just before deer season in the Fall of the year.

To register for this class, you have to go through the link I put above in this article. You can go to the City of Dickson Police Department page if you want and look for that post with the link in it. I will share it several times to get the information out there. Take care and be much blessed. Get registered for class as soon as possible. It may fill up quick.

J. David Cole is the Crime Prevention Officer for the Dickson Police Department.
