You get an idea of how tough saltwater fishing was last season when you study the just-released results of the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament.

Sport fishermen in 2016 registered 3,778 catches that met tournament citation requirements in 36 categories. By comparison, just three years ago the count was 6,137 and it peaked at 8,232 in 2001.
